    Mercury emissions and stable isotopic compositions at Vulcano Island (Italy)

    Sampling and analyses methods for determining the stable isotopic compositions of Hg in an active volcanic system were tested and optimized at the volcanic complex of Vulcano (Aeolian Islands, Italy). Condensed gaseous fumarole Hg(fum) T , plume gaseous elemental Hg(g) 0 and plume particulate Hg(p) II were obtained at fumaroles F0, F5, F11, and FA. The average total Hg emissions, based on HgT/SO2 in condensed fumarolic gases and plumes, range from 2.5 to 10.1 kg y−1, in agreement with published values [Ferrara, R., Mazzolai, B., Lanzillotta, E., Nucaro, E., Pirrone, N., 2000. Volcanoes as emission sources of atmospheric mercury in the Mediterranean Basin. Sci. Total Environ. 259(1–3), 115–121; Aiuppa, A., Bagnato, E., Witt, M.L.I., Mather, T.A., Parello, F., Pyle, D.M., Martin, R.S., 2007. Real-time simultaneous detection of volcanic Hg and SO2 at La Fossa Crater, Vulcano (Aeolian Islands, Sicily). Geophys. Res. Lett. 34(L21307).]. Plume Hg(p) II increases with distance from the fumarole vent, at the expense of Hg(g) 0 and indicates significant in-plume oxidation and condensation of fumarole Hg(fum) T . Relative to the NIST SRM3133 Hg standard, the stable isotopic compositions of Hg are δ202Hg(fum) T =−0.74‰±0.18 (2SD, n=4) for condensed gaseous fumarole Hg(fum) T , δ202Hg(g) 0 =−1.74‰±0.36 (2SD, n=1) for plume gaseous elemental Hg(g) 0 at the F0 fumarole, and δ202Hg(p) II =−0.11‰±0.18 (2SD, n=4) for plume particulate Hg(p) II . The enrichment of Hg(p) II in the heavy isotopes and Hg(g) 0 in the light isotopes relative to the total condensed fumarolic Hg(fum) T gas complements the speciation data and demonstrates a gas-particle fractionation occurring after the gas expulsion inambient T° atmosphere. A first order Rayleigh equilibriumcondensation isotope fractionation model yields a fractionation factor αcond-gas of 1.00135±0.00058

    Difference in predictors and barriers to arts and cultural engagement with age in the United States: A cross-sectional analysis using the Health and Retirement Study

    INTRODUCTION: Arts and cultural engagement are associated with a range of mental and physical health benefits, including promoting heathy aging and lower incidence of age-related disabilities such as slower cognitive decline and slower progression of frailty. This suggests arts engagement constitutes health-promoting behaviour in older age. However, there are no large-scale studies examining how the predictors of arts engagement vary with age. METHODS: Data from the Health and Retirement Study (2014) were used to identify sociodemographic, life satisfaction, social, and arts appreciation predictors of (1) frequency of arts engagement, (2) cultural attendance, (3) difficulty participating in the arts, and (4) being an interested non-attendee of cultural events. Logistic regression models were stratified by age groups [50-59, 60-69, ≥70] for the frequency of arts participation outcome and [50-69 vs ≥70] all other outcomes. RESULTS: Findings indicated a number of age-related predictors of frequent arts engagement, including gender, educational attainment, wealth, dissatisfaction with aging, and instrumental activities of daily living (iADL). For cultural event attendance, lower interest in the arts predicted lack of engagement across age groups, whereas higher educational attainment and more frequent religious service attendance became predictors in older age groups (≥ 70). Adults in both age groups were less likely to report difficulties engaging in the arts if they had lower neighbourhood safety, whilst poor self-rated health and low arts appreciation also predicted reduced likelihood of this outcome, but only in the younger (50-69) age group. Adults in the older (≥ 70) age group were more likely to be interested non-attendees of cultural events if they had higher educational attainment and less likely if they lived in neighbourhoods with low levels of safety. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that certain factors become stronger predictors of arts and cultural engagement and barriers to engagement as people age. Further, there appear to be socioeconomic inequalities in engagement that may increase in older ages, with arts activities overall more accessible as individuals age compared to cultural engagement due to additional financial barriers and transportation barriers. Ensuring that these activities are accessible to people of all ages will allow older adults to benefit from the range of health outcomes gained from arts and cultural engagement

    The First Implementation of Respiratory Triggered 4DCBCT on a Linear Accelerator

    Four Dimensional Cone Beam Computed Tomography (4DCBCT) is an image guidance strategy used for patient positioning in radiotherapy. In conventional implementations of 4DCBCT, a constant gantry speed and a constant projection pulse rate are used. Unfortunately, this leads to higher imaging doses than are necessary because a large number of redundant projections are acquired. In theoretical studies, we have previously demonstrated that by suppressing redundant projections the imaging dose can be reduced by 40-50% for a majority of patients with little reduction in image quality. The aim of this study was to experimentally realise the projection suppression technique, which we have called Respiratory Triggered 4DCBCT (RT-4DCBCT). A real-time control system was developed that takes the respiratory signal as input and computes whether to acquire, or suppress, the next projection trigger during 4DCBCT acquisition. The CIRS dynamic thorax phantom was programmed with a 2cm peak-to-peak motion and periods ranging from 2 to 8 seconds. Image quality was assessed by computing the edge response width of a 3cm imaging insert placed in the phantom as well as the signal to noise ratio of the phantoms tissue and the contrast to noise ratio between the phantoms lung and tissue. The standard deviation in the Superior-Inferior direction of the 3cm imaging insert was used to assess intra-phase bin displacement variations with a higher standard deviation implying more motion blur. The 4DCBCT imaging dose was reduced by 8.6%, 41%, 54%, 70% and 77% for patients with 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 second breathing periods respectively when compared to conventional 4DCBCT. The standard deviation of the intra-phase bin displacement variation of the 3cm imaging insert was reduced by between 13% and 43% indicating a more consistent position for the projections within respiratory phases. For the 4 second breathing period, the edge response width was reduced by 39% (0.8mm) with only a 6-7% decrease in the signal to noise and contrast to noise ratios. RT-4DCBCT has been experimentally realised and reduced to practice on a linear accelerator with a measurable imaging dose reductions over conventional 4DCBCT and little degradation in image quality

    A multi-resolution strategy for a multi-objective deformable image registration framework that accommodates large anatomical differences

    Currently, two major challenges dominate the field of deformable image registration. The first challenge is related to the tuning of the developed methods to specific problems (i.e. how to best combine different objectives such as similarity measure and transformation effort). This is one of the reasons why, despite significant progress, clinical implementation of such techniques has proven to be difficult. The second challenge is to account for large anatomical differences (e.g. large deformations, (dis)appearing structures) that occurred between image acquisitions. In this paper, we study a framework based on multi-objective optimization to improve registration robustness and to simplify tuning for specific applications. Within this framework we specifically consider the use of an advanced model-based evolutionary algorithm for optimization and a dual-dynamic transformation model (i.e. two "non-fixed" grids: one for the source- and one for the target image) to accommodate for large anatomical differences. The framework computes and presents multiple outcomes that represent efficient trade-offs between the different objectives (a so-called Pareto front). In image processing it is common practice, for reasons of robustness and accuracy, to use a multi-resolution strategy. This is, however, only well-established for single-objective registration methods. Here we describe how such a strategy can be realized for our multi-objective approach and compare its results with a single-resolution strategy. For this study we selected the case of prone-supine breast MRI registration. Results show that the well-known advantages of a multi-resolution strategy are successfully transferred to our multi-objective approach, resulting in superior (i.e. Pareto-dominating) outcomes

    The giant eyes of giant squid are indeed unexpectedly large, but not if used for spotting sperm whales

As an explanation to this extreme absolute eye size, we developed a theory for visual performance in aquatic habitats, leading to the conclusion that the huge eyes of giant and colossal squid are uniquely suited for detection of sperm whales, which are important squid-predators in the depths where these squid live. A paper in this journal by Schmitz et al. (BMC Evol Biol 13:45, 2013) refutes our conclusions on the basis of two claims: (1) using allometric data they argue that the eyes of giant and colossal squid are not unexpectedly large for the size of the squid, and (2) a revision of the values used for modelling indicates that large eyes are not better for detection of approaching sperm whales than they are for any other task. We agree with Schmitz et al. that their revised values for intensity and abundance of planktonic bioluminescence may be more realistic, or at least more appropriately conservative, but argue that their conclusions are incorrect because they have not considered some of the main arguments put forward in our paper. We also present new modelling to demonstrate that our conclusions remain robust, even with the revised input values suggested by Schmitz et al

    Survival after Locoregional Recurrence or Second Primary Breast Cancer: Impact of the Disease-Free Interval

    The association between the disease-free interval (DFI) and survival after a locoregional recurrence (LRR) or second primary (SP) breast cancer remains uncertain. The objective of this study is to clarify this association to obtain more information on expected prognosis. Women first diagnosed with early breast cancer between 2003–2006 were selected from the Netherlands Cancer Registry. LRRs and SP tumours within five years of first diagnosis were examined. The five-year period was subsequently divided into three equal intervals. Prognostic significance of the DFI on survival after a LRR or SP tumour was determined using Kaplan-Meier estimates and multivariable Cox regression analysis. Follow-up was complete until January 1, 2014. A total of 37,278 women was included in the analysis. LRRs or SP tumours were diagnosed in 890 (2,4%) and 897 (2,4%) respectively. Longer DFI was strongly and independently related to an improved survival after a LRR (long versus short: HR 0.65, 95% CI 0.48–0.88; medium versus short HR 0.81, 95% CI 0.65–1.01). Other factors related to improved survival after LRR were younger age (<70 years) and surgical removal of the recurrence. No significant association was found between DFI and survival after SP tumours. This is the first study to explore the association between the DFI and survival after recurrence in a nationwide population-based cancer registry.     A first step toward uncovering the truth about weight tuning in deformable image registration

    Deformable image registration is currently predominantly solved by optimizing a weighted linear combination of objectives. Successfully tuning the weights associated with these objectives is not trivial, leading to trial-and-error approaches. Such an approach assumes an intuitive interplay between weights, optimization objectives, and target registration errors. However, it is not known whether this always holds for existing registration methods. To investigate the interplay between weights, optimization objectives, and registration errors, we employ multi-objective optimization. Here, objectives of interest are optimized simultaneously, causing a set of multiple optimal solutions to exist, called the optimal Pareto front. Our medical application is in breast cancer and includes the challenging prone-supine registration problem. In total, we studied the interplay in three different ways. First, we ran many random linear combinations of objectives using the well-known registration software elastix. Second, since the optimization algorithms used in registration are typically of a local-search nature, final solutions may not always form a Pareto front. We therefore employed a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm that finds weights that correspond to registration outcomes that do form a Pareto front. Third, we examined how the interplay differs if a true multi-objective (i.e., weight-free) image registration method is used. Results indicate that a trial-and-error weight-adaptation approach can be successful for the easy prone to prone breast image registration case, due to the absence of many local optima. With increasing problem difficulty the use of more advanced approaches can be of value in finding and selecting the optimal registration outcomes
